Last week there was a bit of a dustup on the [devops mailing list|https://groups.google.com/group/devops] when Mike Fidelman asked about [tools for managing shell scripts|https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/devops/Lyt9_OBV2f0]. Mike didn't feel like he got a good answer on that list so eventually he asked again on the LOPSA tech mailing list https://lists.lopsa.org/pipermail/tech/2012-March/006986.html At the end of that someone asked what the devops list actually was. Mike had [this explanation|https://lists.lopsa.org/pipermail/tech/2012-March/007052.html]: ~[The devops list is~] mostly folks who are users, developers, and fans of chef, puppet, similar tools. A few folks have a broader sense of operations. (Call me sensitive, but when I queried about management of shell scripts, I got jumped on by rapid chef and puppet users.) Well. That certainly doesn't seem to line up with John Willis' [What Devops Means To Me|http://www.opscode.com/blog/2010/07/16/what-devops-means-to-me/].
