The government closed Alcatraz in 1962. In 1970, a group of American Indian activists took over the island in protest. Their more than year-long occupation raised public awareness of inidan issues. However, a downside to the occupation was that several historic buildings were burned down and all the guard housing was condemned and torn down afterwards.
