Every year Renee's aunt and uncle serve as the doctor and nurse on the ship TS Golden Bear, which is part of the California Maritime Academy. Students of CMA spend two semesters on the ship as it travels around the world. On the ship the students attend regular classes and learn how to run a 500-foot vessel.
You can learn more about the current Golden Bear on the GoldenBear path. The old Golden Bear was decommisioned in 1995. It now rests at Oakland's Pier 9 and serves as a floating art space, Artship.
