The new Golden Bear runs on diesel engines which generate electricity to spin the propellers via electric motors. This is in contrast to the old Golden Bear (see ArtShip) which ran on fuel oil powered steam turbines. The engines on that ship are directly connected to the screws. The engine room itself is incredibly loud and hot. This would be an uncomfortable place to spend your time, so the engine control room directly behind the engine room is insulated and separated. From the control room, you look out through windows to the engine room itself. It's sort of like another birdge deep down in the ship (except you don't see outside, of course). Here Kent points out some of the details of the engine control room. <?plugin IncludePhoto file=GoldenbearEngineroomKent.jpg?> Finally, here's a closeup of one of the diesel engines. I think there were two. The scale is hard to see, but that engine is about 10 feet long. <?plugin IncludePhoto file=GoldenbearEngine.jpg?> [forward|GoldenbearDetails]
