Living Clojure - A Study Group

Overview

This is an online study group dedicated to learning the Clojure language. The target audience is people who have done some programming in other languages and want to learn Clojure.

The study group will meet online for one hour every other week. The first meeting will be at 9pm on Thursday 9/8/16. Please obtain the book and finish the first chapter by that time.

My goal is to get 4-5 people in on this.

Process

Before each session, all participants will be expected to work though some section of the book (ideally a chapter). You will be expected to do all exercises in the book beforehand the meeting.

We will meet on a google hangout so everyone can take turns sharing their screens and writing code. Everyone takes turns writing code.

The idea is that by writing and explaining your code to others, you will develop a deeper understanding of how everything works.

I'm open to other ideas beside Google Hangouts, that just seems the simplest.

I've created a slack channel that I will invite everyone to for discussion in between meetings.

The Book

We will be using Living Clojure.

We will also be making heavy use of 4clojure as a learning aid.

Code of Conduct

Don't be an asshole. This is a respectful and supportive environment. We are all here to learn together. We will not tolerate any sort of discrimination or harassment. Violators are subject to being kicked out of the study group.

I don't think anyone is actually going to do any of these things, but I want to make it clear from the outset what kind of behavior is expected from everyone.

Other Thoughts

I participated in a Scala study group session at work that used this format, and it seemed to work well (although I learned I really disliked Scala).

The idea here is to have fun and learn something interesting. If we are all working toward a common goal we can support each other.

Please email me at philiph at pobox dot com if you have any questions or need an invite to the slack channel.

Here's another interesting site for studying clojure.

I'm super excited to start this study group! Let's learn some Clojure!
