Placeholder for a blog post I need to write.  What are the problems with telecommuting at big tech companies?

Too many meetings to attend

managers compete in a zero sum game, resulting in need for 'butts in seats'

IRC/chat works for some things but not all

Is it possible to start at a company, work there a few years, and then move to a permanent telecommute?
